Sildenafil Citrate - Treatments For Impotence

Sildenafil citrate, sold as Viagra, Revatio and under various other trade names, is a medication used in the treatment for impotence or erectile dysfunction(ED) in men. Its use is now standard treatment for erectile dysfunction in all settings, including diabetes. Sildenafil comes in a class of medications called Phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. It treats erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This increased blood flow helps to cause an erection in man with impotence during sexual excitement which is similar to any other normal men getting erection during arousal. However, sildenafil does not protect against STD (sexually transmitted disease).

Sildenafil Citrate is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). PAH is caused due to high blood pressure in the vessels carrying blood to the lungs, causing shortness of breath, dizziness and tiredness. Pulmonary hypertension can be a severe disease with a markedly decreased exercise tolerance and heart failure.

What is erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction is characterized by the inability to develop or maintain an erection of the penis sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. An erection occurs as a hydraulic effect due to blood entering and being retained in sponge-like bodies within the penis. The process is most often initiated as a result of sexual arousal, when signals are transmitted from the brain to nerves in the penis. Erectile dysfunction is indicated when an erection is consistently difficult or impossible to produce, despite arousal.

FDA approval
Sildenafil was synthesized by a group of pharmaceutical chemists working at Pfizer's Sandwich, Kent, research facility in England. The drug was patented in 1996, approved for use in erectile dysfunction by the US Food and Drug Administration on March 27, 1998, becoming the first oral treatment approved to treat erectile dysfunction in the United States, and offered for sale in the United States later that year.
