Simple Catfishing Rigs
Deep Catfish Some of these rigs can get pretty elaborate, yet as long as you are attaching a solid, quality weight to the line’s end in place of a hook, you will have less chance of snagging your line on anything. You will need about a one ounce weight. Tie this weight onto your fishing line using a Palomar knot. You can then tie your hook on between 12 and 18 inches up from your line’s end. This is where you will need to use a dropper loop in order to attach your hook. Another option is to get a wired leader. This will prevent your hook from wrapping around the same line that your weight is attached to. If intend to fish using perch or shad for your bait in order to lure larger catfish to your line you will need to use either a 9/0 or an 8/0 circle hook as this will be much easier to set. The catfish will also be less likely to escape or straighten with the circle hooks. If you happen to use worms, dip baits or chicken livers in small channels when catfishing, then you will need hooks no larger than 2 to 2/0. Shallow Rig If you like fishing for catfish in more shallow areas, you will need some bobbers. Fasten a bobber-stop two or three feet up from your bobber and then use a split shot in between the hook and your bobber. You will then need to follow the same instructions as outlined above as to the size of hook you will need in relation to the kind of bait you are using as well as the sizes of catfish you are looking to reel in. Palomar Knots This knot is one of the best knots that you can use in order to securely attach a weight, hook or any other piece of fishing tackle to the end of your fishing line. These knots are extremely easy to tie and hardly ever unravel or become loose. In fact, the fishing line itself is more likely to break before your Palomar knot will fail.
