Choose the type of plants. One of the first things to consider when choosing a plant for your garden is to determine if it is suitable for your area. Plants with deep extensive root systems or those that are able to store moisture, are able to survive on less water and are drought tolerant, as opposed to those plants which can not tolerant drought and need lots of water to survive. The most important step is to maintain healthy soil. It produces healthy plants, which are better able to withstand disease and insect damage. If the roots of a plant can't penetrate the soil, then it simply won't grow. If your soil is really horrible, you may need to remove it and bring in new soil. Drainage is very important to consider. You want to make sure that if you have low areas, you can build those up so the water doesn't pool in one area. If you have clay soil, be aware: that's the worst soil you can have in a landscape. The plants will essentially just sit and puddle because with clay soil, there is no drainage. Try to group things in threes or fives as a general rule. This way, from a distance it will always look full idea to get a variety of colors that you know will bloom at different times of the year. Make sure the location in your garden can provide the proper environment for the plant to flourish.
