Simple Ways To Prevent Puppy Chewing

Puppies are a great addition to any household. However, deciding to bring a puppy home is a big commitment. Puppies require a lot of attention and time. There are many hurdles to get over when raising a pup. As cute and adorable as they are, there are many bad behaviors which may develop if not trained properly. One of the most common problems with new puppies is chewing. Here are a few helpful techniques to battle puppy chewing.

First of all, it is most important to make sure there are many toys which are devoted to the puppy. Making sure the puppy has his or her own toys to chew on will help avoid unwanted destruction of things like furniture and shoes. However, you must train the puppy to use its own chew toys and not the couch.

When training your puppy to use his or her chew toys, it is very important to give them praise when they are doing so. If they are chewing on something that is unacceptable, they must be reprimanded. As soon as they know what they have done is bad, immediately give them their toy and praise them. This will teach them to chew on their own toys.

In some cases, even though there are plenty of puppy chewing toys, they will still continue to chew on your things. For these situations there are sprays available at any pet store to help deter them from chewing on unwanted items. These sprays are usually sour or bitter apple or pepper based. These sprays are natural and will not harm your pet or furniture.

It is also important to encourage good habits with your puppy. One way to do this is by playing with your puppy and his or her toys. Also it is important that they like their toys. This will encourage them to play with their toys and chew on them. Chew bones are always a favorite of these little guys. Not only do they taste good, but they are also healthy for the puppy's teeth and good for their breath. It's just as important to make sure you do not encourage bad habits. For instance, giving your puppy a chew toy which looks like a foot or a shoe resembles something they are not supposed to chew.

These are a few simple techniques which can be used to battle the problems with puppy chewing. With time and devotion you can train your puppy to not chew on your furniture or other belongings. With love and dedication, your puppy will grow into a wonderful companion.
