Simple And Helpful Tips To Increase Your Home Security

A burglary occurs once every fifteen seconds. This means four times each minute some family has their safety and security shattered. You love your family and you don't want them to go through the psychological fear and pain that a robbery can cause. Therefore, you must start thinking about your home security. You will find a number of small things that you can do around the house that will give you a better chance of thwarting any criminals that would seek to take your belongings as well as your peace of mind. Best of all, it doesn't cost a fortune to turn your house into a fortress.

The first thing you will need to do is look at the exterior of the house. What is it about the outside of the house could make it a target? Are there tree limbs that provide easy access to the upper floors? While you might not think it would make a good entry point into a house, a clever thief certainly would. Does the landscaping provide places for criminals to hide? If it does, then you should trim the hedges or pull them out and redo the landscaping.

At night, do you have enough lighting to deter people from trying to get near your home? You might consider getting motion-sensing lighting. These lights do a good job of keeping criminals away and they are easy on the electric bill. Make sure that you have lights all the way around the house, not just in the front. Include lights in the backyard, and make sure that the side yard has lighting as well. Don't forget about the lighting around the garage and any tool sheds that you might have either.

Next, look at all of the locks around the house. Make sure you look at the locks on all of the doors and all of the windows. Don't forget to check the locks on the upstairs windows, the basement, and the garage as well. If any of the locks are broken or don't work properly, head down to the hardware story and replace them right away. Thieves look for weakness, and a broken lock on any access point to the house is a huge weakness. If you have recently moved into the house or apartment, you will want to change all of the locks immediately. You never know who has keys to those old locks.

Even when you are home, you should remember to keep the doors and windows locked. If you run out on a quick errand, always remember to lock the doors behind you.

Of course, the best thing that you can do to increase your home security is have a professional come to the house and install a home security system. The system can provide monitoring, two-way communication, and much more.

The above tips should help you add enough defense to your home to make even the most determined burglar choose another target.
