Crealy started as a simple open farm in 1989, with adventure playgrounds, pony rides and farming fun. 20 years on and it has become one of Devon’s major attractions. Incorporated within the English Riviera's Geopark and alone recognised as the most important stone age cave in Britain, Kents Cavern has revealed more about palaeolithic Britain than anywhere else. Very well run tours will guide you through 2 million year old caves to discover a unique history uncovered by Victorian archaeological explorers. Open July and August evenings for ghost shows. A shelter for Britain’s earliest humans, this system of prehistoric caves is a fine place to cool off (they’re a constant 14ºC) on a hot day. Your guide will take you back 400 million years to when the cavern was formed under a warm tropical sea. Clovelly Fishing Village The cobbled, traffic-free, high street of this world famous fishing village in North Devon, built into a cleft in a 400' high cliff, tumbles its way down past whitewashed cottages festooned with flowers to the tiny working port. It is famous for its donkeys, which traditionally carry goods up the hill; sledges bring things down. There are links with Charles Kingsley, Turner, Dickens and the Spanish Armada. What everyone remarks upon is the maritime atmosphere, stunning views and the peaceful tranquillity of the village, so visitors often decide on the spot to stay a night or two. The New Inn Hotel in the heart of the village and the Red Lion Hotel by the quayside offer charming en suite accommodation and excellent bar and restaurant food. Newton Abbot Racetrack If you are prepared to chance your arm at lady luck a day at the races is always fun. On the banks of the Teign, the Newton Abbot racetrack is the leading summer jumping course in the UK. Over the winter there is National Hunt racing to enjoy. Set in the rolling Devon countryside, you are guaranteed great racing and great fun. Blackpool Sands Blackpool Sands, set in a sheltered bay surrounded by evergreens and pines, is one of South Devon's most beautiful natural treasures. Blackpool Sands is a shingle beach, like all the main beaches in Start Bay, and is located only 3 miles West of Dartmouth on the beautiful South Devon heritage coast. With sand pits, a bathing raft, kayaks for hire, a range of delicious hot and cold food and a beach shop, it has something for all the family.
