Fruit and vegetables are an important part of your diet. While they may be good for your health, they can be harmful to your budget. Here are some produce buying tip that will keep you eating well and keep your budget healthy, too.
Stock up on Bananas
Bananas are a cheap-o fruit. They cost pennies but are rich in vitamins. Stock up on these rather than pricier fruit like apples or pears.
Don’t Buy Fruit Salad
Don’t buy fruit salad made by the store. Grocery stores mark up fruit even more if they have to clean and chop it for you. Instead, make your own fruit salad. Throw in watermelon, pineapple, grapes and cantaloupe.
Eat Fresh
Buy what’s in season. When it’s in season the prices are the best because the fruit and vegetables are readily available. Make sure you use recipes that call for current items and your meal costs will be much cheaper.
Buy Green... Peppers
All peppers are not created equal. Compare the prices of peppers by color and you’ll see that green bell peppers are much cheaper than yellow and red ones. Green peppers are field grown and therefore much more affordable.
Eat Up
Don’t let your fruit and vegetables get spoiled. Eat what you’ve purchased and that way you’ll get your money’s worth. Throwing away fruit and veggies is just like throwing away your hard earned cash.
Shop Farmer’s Markets
Food grown locally can be cheaper because transporting the products doesn’t cost as much. Plus it’s better for the environment. The end of the day is an especially good time to shop at the farmer’s market because sellers may be more eager to unload their fruits and vegetables rather than haul them home.
