Skydiving Incidents Cutaway

This Cutaway happened to a friend of mine whilst we were training for the UK National championship 8 way speed competition a few years ago.

We are not quite sure what caused the malfunction, although severe line twists may have been the cause. These type of malfunctions are sometimes caused by poor packing of the main parachute or poor body position when deploying the canopy. If this was a student as opposed to an experienced skydiver then an uncontrolled turn or spin could well cause this type of incident. I should point out that student canopies are much more forgiving than the one in this incident, the canopy in this incident is only for very experinced skydivers

Malfunctions of parachutes are fairly rare and usually only caused by human error. In this incident my friends canopy was spinning out of control and decending towards the ground at an alarming rate. As he span out of control he nearly collided with another skydiver who was filming the whole incident.

A collision with each other could have catastrophic results with the possibility of the two skydivers becoming entangled. This highlights the need for a good track and good seperation on breakoff, and the importance of leaving the brakes stowed until you are sure that you have clear air space.

This I believe backs up the view of many skydivers that because modern high performance canopys tend to loose altitude so quickly when things go wrong we should and often do open our main canopies a little higher than we used to many years ago.

My friend cutaway his main canopy and deployed his reserve without any further problems, landing safely under his reserve. Non skydivers often think that the term cutaway means to physically cut the main parachute off with a knife or sharp object. In reality it means operating a device which quickly releases the main canopy thereby allowing the skydiver to deploy his or her reserve without risking an entanglement with the main canopy.

Also when a reserve canopy is deployed it opens much quicker than a main canopy, reserve canopys are designed and packed to provide a quick, reliable opening to reduce the risk of injury or worse..

The improvements in training, equipment design and manufacture have made skydiving a very safe sport, many people class skydiving as dangerous, however I personally consider it to be hazardous as opposed to dangerous, the difference being that there are hazards and we need to be aware of them and have the knowledge to rectify them whenever possible. I also believe in sharing our experiences with each other so that we can all learn how to deal with situations and make our sport safer for everyone.

I hope this article will be of value to some people out there, be they new to our fantastc sport or an old hand.
