Small Businesses Benefit From Using Twitter

Lots of people have fun wasting time on Twitter and Facebook, playing games or hanging out with their friends. But social networking isn't always a waste of time. You've probably heard people in business who feel that social media sites aren't a good fit for their companies, and you'll always hear the same reasons, too.

They either feel that their audience isn't there, or that they will waste time there, or that they can't see the return on investment. While Twitter and Facebook's initial users were mostly younger people and students, that isn't the case any longer. Roughly 64% of Twitter users are 30 or older, and 61% of Facebook users are in the same age bracket. So there is a good chance that if you run a business, your audience probably spends time at one site or the other (or both).

Good things may happen to your company on social networks, so it's clearly not a waste of time – although you can waste a lot of time if you chat or play games. Using social networking can help you to build business relationships and connect with potential customers, and if your customers are happy, you'll probably get their repeat business and maybe even referrals, if they tell their friends about the good experience they have had with your company.

Social networking sites provide an attractive return on investment not only by attracting new leads. They also offer you a chance to build awareness of your brand, engage in meaningful conversation, and further your business relationships. Some businesses actually answer questions, provide customer service and resolve problems with customers on Twitter.

When you think about all the potential benefits, how can your company decide if you're a good candidate for using social media? If your customers, stakeholders and partners are there, by all means follow them.

You can't just decide that your company wants to use the social network. You need a strategy, too. Determine what networks are being used by your customers, and learn about each network, to determine if it will fulfill your company's goals.

After you select the sites you wish to participate on, you'll want to have a schedule for content. This will ensure that your company will be interacting consistently. If you keep your tweets full of insightful comments, you can educate your followers and keep in touch with partners and customers. A tip of the day may be helpful too, so people have something to look for from your company, daily.
