Smart Tips On How To Fall Asleep

Before giving up and going to the pharmacy for sleeping pills, you should know that there are alternatives that will probably work better. Quite a few of us have trouble sleeping occasionally; for some of us it's a chronic problem. But prescription medication should not be our first response. Most doctors would agree that if a lifestyle change or natural remedy can do the trick, then there's no reason for pharmaceutical solutions. So in the interest of avoiding sleeping pills, let's look at some smart tips on how to fall asleep.

In many cases, difficulty sleeping has less to do with what you're doing at night, and more to do with what you're doing during the day. Try increasing your physical activity. This should help you feel more tired and ready for sleep at night.

Do your kids have a bedtime routine, or do you remember when you had one? There is a reason for that: it works. Putting yourself on a strict schedule for a snack, a bedtime story and lights out might work a whole lot better than you think.

Take a look in your surroundings. Is your bedroom restful? Is it a quiet place that can be made both dark and cool? Many people find that changes to their sleep environment make falling asleep a lot easier.

You might want to try a hot shower about an hour before bedtime. This nighttime sequence may give your body a stronger signal that it's time for sleep.

If you're having trouble relaxing enough for sleep at night, try a few minutes of meditation. There's no need to take up a new religion. Simply spend a few minutes focusing on the act of relaxation. By the way, researchers found that people who meditate have higher levels of melatonin, which helps to regulate sleep.

Speaking of melatonin, there are several natural supplements that could have a positive effect on your ability to sleep. Their strength ranges from mild to strong, but they are all naturally safe.

Ultimately your mind is in control of when you can fall asleep. Try clearing your mind by reading a light novel before bed, instead of nonfiction. By all means, avoid working on your to do list.

This is certainly not a complete list of tips on how to fall asleep, but it's a good start. Try them and find out which combination works for you.
