Social Media Outlets Can Boost Your Web Traffic

The popularity of social media websites has exploded in the past few years, and with good reason. Social media networking provides a great way to increase traffic on your website, thereby increasing popularity and success. The term Social Media Optimization, or SMO, refers to the process of using social media outlets to boost your website’s popularity. Here are some basic things you need to know about using social media to optimize your website.

Social Media Builds your Links

Using social media sites will increase the amount of other sites that contain links to your website. This is the golden ticket when it comes to optimizing your site, as the more links to your site that exist on the web, the higher your site will be ranked on popular search engines such as Google.

Many social networking sites allow you to provide buttons that will quickly link your page to the reader or visitor’s page. Say, for example, you are on the Digg network. If someone else also in Digg reads an article on your site and likes the content, they simply click the “Digg This” button and your page is automatically added to their own website.

Social networking allows you to tell others in the network about your website, which increases the odds that they will bookmark your site and put your link on theirs. But getting people to do this is not as easy as simply sharing every page you have. You have to first make your site social media friendly.

Activity is Key

Some people consider SMO to be a form of guerrilla marketing, since it is an inexpensive, though often time consuming way to see big results. In order to reap the full benefits of SMO you need to post regularly and be an active member of the social community you have joined. With the ever increasing number of popular social media websites, finding time to dedicate to social networking is a daunting task to many. More and more companies are finding that hiring full time employees to handle all of their social media networking needs produces results well worth the expense.

Blogs are the Way

Without a doubt, having a blog is essential if you want SMO to be successful. Blog posts attract links from other bloggers, which snowballs into more popularity and traffic. Successful blogs provide regular, fresh and relevant content.

It’s important not to go overboard and spam others with links to your blog as this could backfire. A good way to advertise your blog without annoying people is to visit other blogs that have a forum or comments section, make an insightful comment about their content, and then provide a link to your own blog.

Besides having an active blog on your site, make sure to update all the content on your website regularly. Provide links, lots of images, video clips and interactive tools. Make sure that each page you add to your site is relevant and not just gratuitous filler content. No matter how active you are in SMO, if your website is not interesting to others you simply are not going to see long term results.

Which Sites to use?

There are so many popular social media sites out there, choosing which ones to participate in can be daunting. In SMO, the rule is the more, the better. If you participate in as many of these sites as time and budget will allow and follow the rules and tips outlined above, and you won’t be sorry.
