Social Networking.....any Danger Involved?

Social networking has a deeper influence and definite impact on our life. Numerous websites offer a variety of online facilities for social networking. Internet today has become an active meeting place for people from all corners of this world. Social networking sites enable us to make friendships on a global level, to find product or service that we need or desire, to let others know of our likes and dislikes, to popularize our skills and specialties, even to date and find our life partner.

Among the various online social communities, youngsters are more attracted to those that promote features such as online dating, gaming, alumni reunion, etc. There are other online communities too that include business communities, parent’s communities, medical communities, professional communities, etc. Like-minded people gather to form these communities to share their time and views in one place.

Most of the social networking sites offer facilities of blogging and chatting online. Blogging is used for expressing our ideas and views and our opinions and experiences; chatting gives us a chance to have a real-time conversation, even if you do not see the person you are communicating with.

With such limitless possibilities, social networking websites do have their risks. Most of the time we do not know the real person we are communicating with. We are unable to verify the other person’s identity online. This poses as a threat to our security if dishonest individuals try to take advantage of their anonymous status. Some might go against laws and commit criminal acts, some might even associate with an extremist or terrorist and share information without being aware that such sharing might pose a considerable threat to personal or national security.

How do we exercise caution to save ourselves from these risks?

Register only with such networking websites that keeps an eye on user activities from time to time.
Never reveal sensitive information related to your personal contact number and address to an unknown, unidentified person.
Do not send photographs to unknown strangers you meet online.
If you need to meet a new friend from the net in person, choose a public place than a secluded area so as to minimize a personal threat to your security.
When or if you sense danger or hatred or fanatic ideas from the other unknown person, do not continue with any kind of association with him and avoid him completely.
Well, considering these risks, it is advisable that we keep our security as our first priority in our minds as we continue to use these social networking websites.

Social networking websites are fun and useful only as long as you are aware of what you are doing. So, beware of risks and tread on safer Internet grounds.
