Some Basic Facts About Ovarian Cysts

An ovarian cyst is a sac that contains a liquid or a liquid-solid mix. They can form on the inside or on the outer surface of an ovary. While cysts might rupture, bleed, or become painful requiring surgery, most are harmless and will normally disappear on their own.

There are a large variety of ovarian cyst types and they can occur in a large range of sizes. Often they are pea sized but have been known to reach over a hundred pounds in weight and measure 40 inches in diameter. A broad range of symptoms are possible with ovarian cysts, from no symptoms to severe pain. Ovarian cysts have a lot of different causes, however, the majority are a result of the menstrual cycle.

Usually, ovarian cysts happen during the reproductive years, but can still happen to women of any age. Of all cases of ovarian cysts, about 15% occur in post menopausal women. Women who are post menopausal are more likely to have malignant cysts.

Ovarian cysts are usually of a benign type called functional cysts because they occur as the result of normal processes within the ovaries. Other types of benign cysts are cystadenoma cysts, endometrial cysts, and dermoid cysts.

Often a person isn't aware that she has a cyst until it's discovered during a routine pelvic exam. After discovery of the cyst, a treatment plan is then determined on the basis of test results. An ultrasound test may be used to determine a cyst's location, shape and size.

Ultrasound testing will also give information on whether the cyst is solid, fluid filled or a combination of both. A specific test may be done to check for hormone related conditions. A blood test is normally used to check for cancerous cysts.

Your doctors diagnosis is the only way to know for sure if you have them. Sometimes unsuspecting women will find out that they have cysts after a checkup. Others discover that their problem is another condition altogether even though they have painful abdominal symptoms.

The nature of a cyst as well as its type will determine its most appropriate treatment. A small benign cyst causing no pain, will require little if any treatment. Your doctor may prescribe birth control pills to repress ovarian cysts by stopping ovulation. They can also shrink down the size of existing cysts.

The greatest concern of all with ovarian cysts is whether they are malignant. Even benign cysts can present serious complications if they rupture, grow larger, or continue to multiply. This is the reason why they have to be monitored by your doctor on a regular basis.
