Spain: Europe’s Overlooked Cultural Destination

When most people think of Spain, they’ll probably think of party destinations like Benidorm, Ibiza and Alicante. But there is so much more to do than sunbathing, drinking and clubbing on a holiday in Spain, and if you want to rediscover this fabulous country, then here are some great ways to make sure you have an exceptional break in Spain.

What to See

Spain is home to a number of world heritage sites, such as the San Miguel de Lillo Church in Oviedo and the Casa Mila ‘La Pedrera’ House in Barcelona. But as well as these world-class sites, there are a number of beautiful monuments, museums and historic places of interest scattered throughout the country, which help introduce Spanish history and culture to tourists, and are undisturbed by the country’s growing clubbing tourism lifestyle.

What to Do

After all that sightseeing, it’s time to indulge in some traditional Spanish cuisine and fine wine, such as Paella served with a rich rioja. Spain is particularly well known for its seafood dishes and bean stews, all of which vary from region to region, and what you eat and the way it’s prepared entirely depend on where you are in Spain. While it’s easy to go for familiar foods, such as junk food like chips, pizza and burgers, make an effort to experience the authentic taste of Spanish cooking, and you may be pleasantly surprised.

When to Go

While a lot of tourists choose to visit mainland Spain and the surrounding islands during the hot summer months, there’s no reason why you can’t travel to the country at a different time of year, it all depends on the weather and the region. So do some research, and find out when the best time to travel to Madrid or Barcelona will be, and you can get a feel of the real Spain.
