Specialist Therapy For Stuttering And Stammering

Are you OK Steve, you look like you have been crying? I need your help mum? Why what is the matter? It is this stupid stutter - it is ruining my life; I am a lauging stock at school. Do you want me to telephone the speech and language therapist again Steve to book you another appointment with her? Mum I do not want to sound negative but that is the last thing that I want you to do - I have been attending various forms of speech and language therapy for the past ten years and I am worse now than I have ever been. What I now need mum is a much more specialised form of stuttering therapy - therapy from a person who perhaps understands what I am going through because the speech therapists certainly don't. This was a conversation that I had with my mother when I was aged fourteen. I would have to wait another eight years before I finally managed to attain my goal of total fluency.

Fast forward to 2010 - what forms of specialised stuttering therapy are available today? And what is meant by the word specialised stammering/stuttering treatments? Specialised is where the therapy is via a person who has previously had this form of speech impediment and therefore has a good comprehension of the effects of stuttering.

3. A one-to-one intensive five-day speech course for people who stutter

5. A weekend speech course

There sure are many more specialised therapy options today than there was during the period when I had the stutter!
