Specialized Road Bikes Are At The Top Of Their Field

Specialized road bikes makes bikes at many levels of quality. But when it comes to high end bikes they have truly made their mark. One of their most recent additions to the pro level road bike ranks is the Venge.

Specialized claims the Venge is the lightest, stiffest, most aerodynamic, fastest, road bike ever made. Specialized solicited the help of McLaren the renowned car racing team to help create a light sub-950g, aerodynamic shaped road bike. They took advantage of FEA analysis and their special computer programs to develop a new fabrication method which ended up making it possible to build a frame that’s 15% lighter. This included removing a non-structural layer of carbon fiber that normally is used which saved 40g without any harm to performance.

It took them four years of hard work and an extraordinary collaboration to develop the Venge which they say is a unbelievable 8% faster. These new version of the Venge is truly designed to win professional races but of course you too can own it for a price.

At first the governing body that oversees bike racing would not approve the design and they had to go back to the wind tunnel and redesign the aerodynamics at the same time utilizing three decades of expertise by McLaren in carbon fiber construction. The design combined the aero, and race proven benefits of a couple of Specialized’s road bikes to put it over the top in light weight stiffness and performance.

It is all based around a high modulus FACT 11 carbon fiber frame which seems to have an inconsistent mix of thin yet beefy construction made possible with internal ribbing formed in a wind tunnel tested aerodynamic shape.

It has been the talk of the town now for a while. There hasn’t been a bike release by any company that generated people’s attention like the Verge. But it isn’t hard to see why the word spread so quickly around the web. One thing for sure is it looks tremendous. The colors black and red in the graphics do compliment the frames lines nicely. McLaren’s involvement in its development also helped generate a lot of the initial interest.

In the world of biking everything seemed to change when the industry started using carbon fiber to fabricate many and now most of its high end bicycle frames. There were many changes maybe none as big as the bigger companies starting to employ engineers to help with their designs. Another thing the bigger companies did was start to produce their own tubing for the first time though some just had someone else make them to their specs. But this was a new approach again with getting McLaren involved in the design and development of this new bike. It was a good match as everything McLaren is about has been built on the principles of good design and solid engineering that resulted in quality manufacturing.
