Splendid Doll Furniture: Planing Suggestions

An Addition that can make a Big Difference

As you are building and tweaking your dollhouse you will discover some great time saving secrets. There are some great things that you can add to your house, and I just simply came across one that helped out a lot. I simply created a floor board to use for the trim around the floor of the dollhouse. Floor Trim is not a new creation, but what I found is instead of buying it, to use a very thin balsa wood found in most craft stores. Simply paint it the color of your dollhouse and attach it to the foot of your walls. My biggest discovery is when the trim hid most of the fine mistakes between the floor and the wall. Another great thing about the trim is that it covers the edges of the wallpaper and prevents fraying. This discovery truly was a small one, but I believe that it really added to my dollhouse.

Adding Little Touches to your Kit

This hobby is about the little details. Accessories are the china in the kitchen, portraits for the walls, and the books in the bookcase. Adding these into your kit will spruce it up, add a fun touch, and cause visitors to sit and stare. But not only will it add that creative touch, it makes it look more realistic. And don't hold back, there are so many miniatures out there that there is no reason you cannot get exactly what you want.

Contrasting your Colors: Making things Pop

Contrast is the idea of putting to opposing colors or ideas next to each other. In this fashion you can generate movement of the eye from one area to another, or concentrate the focus of a room on one particular aspect. For the best color contrast look at a color wheel and choose colors that are opposite one another. Using contrast in a room, is like using salt with food, you use to much and you get overwhelmed quickly. The standard is to restrain yourself to one contrast in a room, this way it doesn't get cluttered.

Sizing to Your Advantage

There are three major sizing elements that you will need to deal with in interior layout with a dolls room. The first one is the scale of the furniture, second is the size of the room, and third is the relative size of the furniture as it compares to other pieces of furniture. First is the scale of furniture, make sure that your furniture is the right scale for your dollhouse. Meaning, look up the miniature size of your dollhouse kit, if it is one inch scale then you need to buy one inch furniture The second size element, sizing up the room, means that you are not getting furniture that will not fit in the room. Make sure that you measure your furniture room and are aware of the dimensions of the furniture that you buy. Lastly, the final point is the size of the furniture as it compares to other pieces around it. Smaller pieces will get less attention than other pieces, and the larger pieces should be the ones that you want everyone to look at.
