Do you know what I mean by social sites? My Space is probably the best known of them. A social site is a web site where you join and socialise with others in a virtual way. Some have photos of you and your real name whereas as most use avatars and "tags" as names. So you can be who ever you want to be in this virtual world.
Squidoo is not really a true social site in that it allows you to create what are called lens or a type of web site come blog idea where it is just so easy to fill in the blanks to create a site. Maybe you have seen Squidoo lens and wondered what they were. "Squidoo" the name sounds like some sort of sea creature and it has a graphic on each lens of a weird kinder cute looking quid like creature with one large eye that seems to follow you around the lens as you read through it.
Producing a Squidoo lens may be daunting at first but once you produce the first one it seems to become addictive and before you know it you have a real colony of them. Within the Squidoo environment is a real social network of like-minded people who are more than willing to advise you on how to make you rather poor effort into a real masterpiece. All they ask in return is that you tell them how much you like their lens and they appreciate a rating on their lens.
So if Squidoo is a social site how does it help market your product or idea? It's all about traffic and links to other web sites and blogs. You try to get lots of people to see you now great masterpiece of a lens and some people will want to know more and start clicking on your links for further information about your product. So add a link or two back to your web site for them to get more information.
Where Squidoo comes into it's own is with addons like videos which are a real hit. So make a couple of videos add them to You Tube and then you can add them to your Squidoo lens. Remembering the funnier they are the better people like them. You can also add RSS feeds from your blogs for content changes so that your lens becomes dynamic and you keep people coming back. One criteria for a high ranking lens is traffic so keep changing and rotating content as this helps increase you lens rank. If however you can get your lens in Top 1000 or even better Top 100 then your lens will start to generate it's own traffic.
