Sri Lanka Ranked As Top Destination For Weddings Abroad In Kuoni Poll

Kuoni’s annual Travel Trends Report has revealed that Sri Lanka is one of the favourite destinations for UK couples tying the knot overseas.

The travel and tour operator’s poll highlights the hot travel trends for UK travellers for the forthcoming year as well as the top locations for destination weddings and honeymoons.

Sri Lanka weddings emerged as the favourite location for engaged couples who are looking to escape the increasing costs of weddings in the United Kingdom and enjoy exotic nuptials abroad.

The number of couples who are getting married abroad is steadily increasing and according to recent research, one in five couples are heading overseas to say “I Do”.

With the average UK wedding costing nearly £20,000, many brides and grooms are heading to foreign countries for weddings abroad where significant savings can be made.

Popular choices for destination weddings include Caribbean islands such as Antigua and Jamaica; Hawaii; the Maldives and the Seychelles; and Mediterranean hotspots such as Italy, Greece and Cyprus.

Sri Lanka is the perfect place to exchange vows with its breathtaking natural landscapes made up of miles of pristine soft sand beaches, waterfalls, natural parks and ancient temples.

Since the end of the country’s civil war in 2009, tourism in Sri Lanka has increased and more engaged couples are planning their special day on the island. The nation is also a favourite for honeymoons and couples can enjoy activities such as exploring the ancient ruins, relaxing on white sand beaches, trekking through the lush jungles, or riding elephants.

Engaged couples can choose traditional Buddhist ceremonies or civil services in romantic venues such as oceanfront boutique hotels or tropical gardens, while beach weddings in Sri Lanka are a great way to celebrate with close friends and family while embracing picturesque surroundings.

The Kuoni Travel Trends Report also revealed that Kuramathi Island Resort in the Maldives remained as the top spot for family destinations, and Thailand was first place for solo holidays.

The results of the poll, which was established in 1980, are based on bookings that were made up until December, 2011 for holidays and weddings in 2012.

Sri Lanka was also recently named among the ‘Best Trips for 2012’ by National Geographic and Condé Nast Traveller.
