St Andrew’s Day In Edinburgh

St Andrew’s Day is Scotland’s patron saint’s day, and this year Edinburgh offers greater opportunity than ever to join in the celebrations.

St Andrew’s Day has become increasingly significant for Scotland in recent years. Hitherto November 30th has often passed by like any other day for most Scots, unlike most countries where patron saint and independence days are acknowledged with patriotic fervour.

This is now all changing, and 2009 – Scotland’s year of Homecoming – is set to bring the biggest ever range of St Andrews Day celebrations to the Scottish capital.

The series of events for the Homecoming Finale weekend November 28th-30th includes traditional and contemporary music, family entertainment at the St Andrew’s Square Festival and an awesome fireworks display.

There will also be a Scottish Film event, where Caledonia’s contribution to film making will be shown at the Cameo Cinema.

Further attractions include the St Andrew’s Day pipe band parade through the historic Royal Mile, and the St Andrew’s Day Debating Championship Final at the Scottish Parliament.

For a truly patriotic event, take part in the St Andrew’s Day Rally. Now in its sixth year, the rally is led by the music of pipers from the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle.

Departing at 4.30pm on Saturday, November 28th, the marchers will make their way through the historic Royal Mile in the city’s Old Town, finishing outside the Holyrood Parliament buildings for speeches.

St Andrew’s weekend is also the starting point for the capital’s Winter Festivals, which bring sparkle to the city throughout the season.

Edinburgh Christmas opens during St Andrew’s weekend, with the turning on of the enchanting Princes Street lights. This special year will see the addition of an eccentric, one-off event, with the Art Car Parade.

The buzz surrounding Homecoming will ensure this is a must-visit event, so early booking is advised for Edinburgh accommodation.

Fortunately, there is plenty of quality choice of Edinburgh apartments and hotels in Edinburgh, so whatever your requirements, you can be situated in the heart of the city, a stone’s throw from the revelries of St Andrew’s Day in Edinburgh.
