Starting A Child's Herb Garden

You can help kids to better understand the healing qualities of herbs by presenting them with their own herb garden. Some herbalists have suggested a circular garden which is enclosed by giant sunflowers along with a twig stake teepee in the center. It is here that the kids can find refuge from the rest of the world by sitting in with the crawly critters! You can choose a 15 by 15 foot circle that is located in an open space receiving a maximum amount of sunlight. The kids will learn a lot by visualizing the sunflowers growing in the direction of the sunlight. A section comprising of eight to ten segments should be formed in the mid section of the circle with the intention of herb plantings.

The choice of the herbs should be such that they do not affect the safety of the children as these little ones tend to put everything in their mouth. You can opt to grow plants like Lemon Balm, Coriander, Marjoram, Lemon verbena, Thyme and Parsley in kid’s gardens. Kids can gain a lot of knowledge in relation to gardening by growing herbs. It is for this reason that herbs turn out to be a wonderful first plant for children. Many children get excited about the fact that they can grow herbs which can be used to cook their food. It becomes easy to teach the names of the herbs to kids by way of the garden.

You should always make small herb gardens for kids for fun and let them think of it as a fun project and not a chore. The placement of the herb garden for kids should be done close to your own as that will make it a simple task for you to manage things. You can also make a pizza herb garden which teaches the child about culinary herb gardening as well as about the source from which they end up with delicious food. A pizza herb garden should have parsley, basil and oregano. The designing of a pizza herb garden can be done in the shape of a slice of pizza for amusement. You can also grow an aromatic herb garden in which the herbs possess the smells of various fragrant herbs such as mint, lemon grass and sage. A tea herb garden is a wonderful idea and if you have a little girl she will find delight in being able to grow her own tea herbs and then invite all of her friends over for a tea party.

A child will learn to grow an aromatic herb garden on becoming familiar with aromatic herbs. However care must be taken so that children understand that the herbs are meant for fragrance and they must not be consumed without adult supervision. The kids can also grow plants belonging to the mint family as spearmint, peppermint as well as chocolate mint. All this effort will largely help your child to grow up in the lap of nature and develop skills related to gardening.
