Starting A Garden Is A Lot Like Playing In The Dirt

You probably played in the dirt a lot as a kid. You dug holes in the ground, sculpted castles and raced matchbox cars around makeshift tracks. The sandbox and other patches of dirt your parents allowed you to play in may have been like another world to you, where you imagined yourself taking make believe adventures and journeys. Time is limited when we become adults and playing in the dirt becomes a thing of the past. Therefore, many adults will spend countless hours perfecting their garden. As a gardener, you will now have an excuse to get down in the dirt and play as often or as little as you want. If you have thought about beginning your own garden, here are some things you should do if you want to make sure your garden is successful.

Almost every garden requires the gardener to do some planning before they plant. The fact is that seeds take time to grow and if you want those seeds or seedlings to really thrive they need to be put into the ground at specific times of year. It is possible that you could grow a couple of flowers here or there if you really want to. If, however, you want to have a great garden, you'll have to get used to the idea of doing a lot of work a long time in advance. Some plants need to be planted a long time before they will actually bloom. Some plants don't bloom for an entire year after they are planted. Be ready to commit to your garden if you want it to grow to be healthy.

If you make a decision to baby your plants, it is possible to begin sprouting them indoors in seeding pots weeks or months ahead of planting them. By starting them in your home it is easier to control the climate conditions and you will have better luck at growing plants that are sensitive or "high maintenance". For some plants it is as easy as tossing a seed in the dirt. Lettuce is one of these plants. More specific care and nurturing can be required for other plants to thrive.

Don't purchase every tool in the garden shop just because they're hanging there. Start with a few basics like a garden rake, a garden spade and a good hose and then build from there. The more you work outside the more you will learn about which tools you actually use a lot and which tools you almost never use at all. Don't let the garden department clerk talk you into buying a bunch of "just in case" tools. It's possible that you'll spend too much money on things that you won't ever use. Everybody can have a garden. The thing you need to do if you want your garden to be successful is to make sure that you use the right steps to grow your garden. Planning out your garden ahead of time and learning how best to care for your plants is important if you want the garden to thrive. If you want to have more fun when you garden you need to learn everything you can about keeping your garden plot healthy and map out a regular care routine for your plants. You might even find that you look forward to playing in your garden every day!
