Staying Away From The Negative Reaction Of Amoxicillin And Alcohol Interaction

Infections such as acute otitis media, bronchitis, pneumonia, skin irritations and urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria. The occurrences are so prevalent globally. Such infections caused by the susceptible microorganisms could be cured by amoxicillin. A person undergoing medication should be aware of the most important precaution and that is no alcohol in the diet. Amoxicillin and alcohol have a negative interaction and reaction once consumed together.

Amoxicillin is included in the family of penicillin. It is similar to the bacterial spectrum of ampicillin. Normally, amoxicillin is prescribed to be taken orally for every eight to twelve hours or thrice a day depending on the severity of the infection. It is important to retain the regular interval so as to keep the medication levels constant within the body. Otherwise, the optimum level of amoxicillin to kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria will not take effect. It is also important to remember that once you miss taking it, you will have to repeat from the start. On the other hand, an overdose of amoxicillin may lead to decreased production of urine, lowered kidney functions and kidney failure. And most importantly, you should understand why amoxicillin and alcohol should not be together.

Aside from being allergic to amoxicillin, most people have proven that amoxicillin and alcohol have many negative effects. A good reason for this is to understand the composition of alcohol. Alcohols can be used as a beverage in the form of ethanol only or ethyl alcohol. Since pre-historic times, ethyl alcohol has been utilized by men in the form of alcoholic beverages. Alcohols could also be utilized as fuel and for many scientific, medical and industrial uses. Two other alcohols whose uses are relatively widespread are propyl alcohol (propanol) and butyl alcohol (butanol).

In case of a serious bacterial infection, alcohol should be avoided as it contains sugar compounds. These compounds are conducive for bacterial proliferation. In addition, alcohol may amplify the severity of any side effects of amoxicillin. There are cases that patients under amoxicillin would experience dizziness or drowsiness. Alcohol may even boost the symptoms of dizziness experienced by people taking amoxicillin. Much worst, alcohol can make those symptoms worse. Sometimes, the side effects of amoxicillin may get exaggerated due to alcohol intake. It is then advisable to immediately stop your alcohol consumption once you experience these side effects.

Another important thing to do is taking in a lot of fluids and rest in order to be hydrated. Do this instead of indulging in sipping alcohol. If you could not resist and instead would like to have an alcoholic drink while on a course of treatment with amoxicillin; do this an hour or more after taking the medication. This will ensure that the body absorbs the antibiotic before alcohol is introduced into the system. Although there are no scientific studies yet to fully explain such reaction; it is best to be on the safer side. If you experience severe side effects while taking amoxicillin, contact a physician immediately. And better to prevent such negative reactions, therefore, stay away from amoxicillin and alcohol habit.
