Stop Dwelling.....just Do It!

Okay, so you have problems. Who doesn’t? You think that your problems are bigger than you, bigger than anyone else’s, and bigger than life itself. Let me tell you right here and now that none of that is true. Your problems cannot be bigger than you because they would have killed you. It may seem like your problems are bigger than other people’s, and I assure you that other people think the exact same thing about yours. Remember this, though, if your problems were bigger than life, then you’d either God or the world is coming to an end. Neither of which is likely to happen anytime soon.

If you continue to dwell and whine and complain about the problem you will spend half your life focusing on the problem, giving it more power over you as opposed to finding solutions to get rid of it altogether. Sometimes you may be afraid of trying new things because you may make a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. Don’t focus on the past and give a problem more power than it deserves. Here are a few of my thoughts on how to deal with the nasty dwelling that may cloud your mind:

1. Stop thinking about the past, and focus on the present moment. The problem was created in the past, and you cannot change the past. Don’t think about it, don’t give it any power. Let it go. After a few days, you will realize that the problem is the furthest thing from your mind.

2. Be aware that your dwelling is nothing but an incorrect way to tackle the problem. When you dwell, you focus on the problem, not on the solution.

3. Find a new focus for your thoughts. A great way to refocus is to start thinking about the potential solutions for this problem. When you are stuck on the issue, you waste precious time and brain cells focusing on the wrong things. You must get back on track by focusing on the present or future instead of on the past.

At this point, you may have taken some time to get some aspects of your life in order. Those steps may have been completely necessary as they gave you the tools and knowledge to start working towards your life-long goals. Perhaps you needed to finish your degree, take additional courses, save some money, get rid of debt, etc. This is great as long as you are not stuck on the planning and preparing. If you notice that you are stuck, stop, take a breath, and act now.

This moment is the perfect time to start. If you find yourself standing at the edge of the pool watching others have a ball in the cool water while you are still taking your merry time, it is time to jump in. All those people in the water took action and are now having a great time, enjoying the benefits of their actions. Meanwhile, you are standing there waiting for the perfect moment, for the water to be just right, or for divine inspiration. You are certainly not having the best time you could have.

Stop putting off your goals. It is natural to be nervous or afraid. Start small if you want. You may want to start by sitting on the edge of the pool and soaking your legs for a little while to acclimate, but don’t sit there all day. Sooner rather than later, you must get back up, take a deep breath, and jump. The initial shock will last a millisecond and then you will realize that you are already in the water and that it was not that big a deal. Soon enough you will be swimming around comfortably, diving, and playing water volleyball.

This analogy works for everyone in every situation. Start small, test the waters, get acclimated, and then jump right into it. Soon you will realize that you will be comfortable and experienced enough to move on to bigger goals. Once you have started working towards your goals, it will become easier to continue. Keeping busy with the things that bring you closer to your goals will give you a sense of accomplishment and will help you stay positive and believe that your goal is closer everyday.

Taking action makes you successful. All successful people are action-oriented. Remember, you can plan and talk all you want, but nothing will happen until you take action. Just do it.
