Strategies To Choose A Perfect Domain Name

The domain name of your site plays a major role in determining the success of your website. Here are some strategies to choose an effective name:

Identify the purpose of the domain name
Choose a business name and domain name that people will get attracted to. It is advisable to find a domain name that sounds closest to your company name as well. So if you are starting out, choose your domain name with care and a company name that is self explanatory and attractive. If the purpose of the domain is for a one-page sales letter site, then you will have to think of strategies to promote the site. Pay per click is the best option, where the likelihood of people noticing your site is higher. You can buy keywords from Google but you have to ensure that the name is compelling enough for people to actually go and click onto the link.

Brainstorm for names
Think along the lines of the problem you are going to solve in your business or the solutions you provide.

Keywords in domain
Think of all the keywords anyone would use to get onto your site. Include two or more of the keywords as part of your domain name. It could be your industry, your niche, solution that you offer etc.

Short and sweet
You don’t want anyone to go on and on typing and make a hundred spelling errors in the process. Ensure you domain name is short, memorable and sweet such that people can recall the name even without the help of a search engine. Avoid using special characters other than hyphens. Your domain name can contain up to 67 characters and numbers, although it is definitely advisable to use a shorter name.

Your name, domain name
It takes a lot of time, hard work and money to develop a name into a brand name, for example: Oprah. Sometimes, despite a lot of trial, you may not get a domain name of your choice. When you purchase your own given name as domain name, there might be common spelling errors that people might make. You can choose your name as domain and you also have the option of redirecting it to your primary website. This gives scope for flexibility and preference for you.

.COM / .BIZ / .NET
So what do you choose? Choosing a domain name with a .com is way better than getting a .net or a .biz or a dot.org or any other such family. Even if you have to pick a hyphenated domain name, it is still worth getting one in the .com family than any others.

More versions to your primary name
You may want to secure a couple of more options to your primary name that sound similar, accommodate common spelling errors and even secure .net and .org versions of the primary name to keep competitors away.

Your domain name establishes your identity online. Hence, take time to select a good one that will serve you well and bring you more and more clients for years to come.
