Stretching will keep you limber during the run, will keep you from getting cramps and tight muscles after the run, and will also help prevent injuries. Tight muscles connected to tight tendons are much more likely to sprain that those that are loose and limber.
Another thing to beware of is over training. Running can be mesmerizing, and some people can really push themselves to amazing limits. But the more you train, the more you expose yourself to injury. Rest is just as important as training, as it gives your body more time to recover and recuperate. Many studies have shown that more sports injuries than you'd think are due to over training.
Shoes are also important. Changing your shoes frequently is an important part of staying injury free. While a good pair of running shoes don't come cheap, there's no reason to squeeze every penny out of them. Change them often, at least twice a year if you run more than a few miles a week. This can keep your joints from suffering from the shock due to shoes that are past their prime. Many people buy a couple pairs at once and rotate them, to get a longer life.
Traffic is another consideration. Many people live in cities and don't have easy access to trails or other places where cars aren't everywhere. Consider getting some reflective material for your shirt, especially if you run late at night or early in the morning. Getting hit by a car will certainly take you out of the game for a while.
Simple ideas, but when practiced regularly, you'll find they allow you to fully enjoy your running habit. You'll be able to run further, faster and without injury, getting you the maximum benefit possible.
