Strength Training Workouts For Kids - Tips And Advice

Strength training workouts are not only important for adults, but for kids as well. Most kids are not going to enjoy the same workouts adults do. There are plenty of fun ways to build strength without feeling like you’re getting a workout.

One fun way for kids to get a strength training workout is by having a wheelbarrow race. Have the kids lie flat on their stomachs with their legs straight. An adult will then pick up the kids ankles and hold the ankles the same way they would hold a wheelbarrow. The kids will then straighten their arms lifting themselves off the ground as they would with a pushup. From there, the race begins.

Have somebody yell “ready, set, go!” and then have the kids walk on their hands while the adults support the ankles. Make sure there’s a finish line so you know who wins the race. This game is great because it builds strength in the arms and shoulders, as well as the core areas of the body.

Tug-of-war is fun for kids and adults. To make this fair, try to make sure weight is evenly distributed on both sides of the rope. Draw a line on the ground that is directly in the center of the rope. From there it's a contest of strength as both sides start to pull in opposite directions. The first team to pull one person from the opposite team over the line wins.

Monkey bars at a park or playground can also be a great way for kids to have fun and workout. Most adults remember playing on playground equipment, but never considered this much of a strength builder. Kids supporting their own weight and swinging from bar to bar builds strength in the upper body. Kids are also getting the benefits of a good stretch.

These are all fun family ways to get strength training workouts outside of the home and gym. Now it's time to plan a weekend picnic and put these workouts to the test. Don't forget the wheelbarrow race and tug-of-war prizes!
