Strip Clubs: Know The Terminology

Any in-group has its own set of words and phrases that the general public is unlikely to know about. This isn't done in an intentional attempt to confuse outsiders; it's simply a natural evolution when people have their own set of concepts to describe. Regardless of intentions, however, it can be intimidating for an outsider who suddenly finds himself in this world. Strip clubs are just like anything else in this respect. There are a number of terms and words used within one that you will not hear elsewhere. But this does not have to make you uncomfortable. Just ask, if you don't know what something means. If you want a jump-start, here are some phrases and terms you might run into.

Champagne Room

The champagne room is common to many strip clubs. In other high profile clubs, this might be referred to as VIP seating or some other term. It is basically a room where you can get away from the crowded, raucous activity going on in the main part of the establishment. If you've ever been to a club where people are relaxing on couches in another, partitioned part of the place, then you basically have an idea. It will cost you a pretty penny to get inside this room, but it may be worth it if you don't like the atmosphere in the club proper.

Gawker

You don't want to be labeled a gawker. This term refers to someone who goes to strip clubs, but is extremely tight with a dollar. They sit at a table, order maybe a single drink, and that's about it. They just sit back and soak up the (nearly) free entertainment. Not only is this a poor way to enjoy yourself at a club, it is also frowned upon by management. As they reserve the right to refuse service to anyone, you may find yourself unwelcome at the club if this is how you conduct yourself. Some people are more freewheeling with their money than others, but you have to make an attempt to tip.

Stage Name

As you might have guessed, most dancers decline to use their real names when they perform in strip clubs. While the environment of a good club is generally a safe one, the bouncers can't do much to protect an entertainer after she leaves. As you might imagine, putting her real name out there is not the best idea for a girl concerned about her safety. If you do happen to know a girl's real name, do not use it while in the presence of others. Use her stage name only, no matter how ridiculous it might be.
