Structure And Support For Trellis Grapes

The grapes grow on vines that cannot support themselves; therefore, trellises are needed to hold up the vines. To trellis grapes, the trellis needs to be structurally sound and strong since they will be carrying the weight of the grapes while on the vine. Knowing the type of trellis needed is a decision that must be made at the beginning when designing the vineyard. What type of trellises to buy or make will be dependent upon several factors:

Price - For smaller vineyards, it may be cost effective to buy ready-made trellises. They come in many different sizes and shapes and depending upon the growing area and budget they can be quite decorative. If cost is an issue, hold off on the trellis and plant the vines, just remember to get the trellis system up and secured for the vine before they are needed. The larger vineyards will probably find it to be cost effective to do the trellis construction on-site.

The Vineyard - What variety of grape did you choose for your vineyard? Does it fit the soil conditions of your growing area and is it appropriate for the local climate? These same questions will determine what type of trellis you will need for your vineyard. Remember, the trellis needs to be strong and sturdy enough to take the weight of the vine and grapes, especially if there happens to be a high yield grape crop. There usually is a right way and wrong way to do things. If you want to take worry out of the equation as far as your trellis is concerned, then make sure you build strong brace assemblies at the ends of each row. Again, the size of the vineyard determines how the trellis will be set-up and braced and what type of trellis used.

How Many Vines? - This may be a situation where you do not need to worry about a large area. If that's the case and you will only have a few vines you may consider an arbor; however, if you do grow the vines close to buildings or other structures, make sure that the sunlight can reach all around the plant. Give yourself about four feet away from the structure. Remember, also, that vines can cause damage to other structures.

When To Set-up The Trellis Grape System? - The Fall is the best time to set-up the system and preferably a year before it will be needed by the vine. This is a matter of not putting stress on yourself or your plants because you waited until it was almost too late.

Having a basic knowledge of growing grapes to make wine and being prepared with the proper tools and ingredients can create a positive experience for a beginner. A vineyard is not a weekend project - think long-term!
