When you have put up your posters and stamped your mark on your new home take a bit of time to check that your place is fire and carbon monoxide safe. Your landlord should provide you with an up to date Gas Safety Certificate for the property and this should show that there has been a service within the last year. Have a nose around your new house and ensure that there is adequate ventilation around all gas appliances. Your landlord will be able to tell you where the carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms are located, and if there isn’t one then arrange to have one fitted. Carbon monoxide is tasteless, odourless, invisible and above all deadly. It can’t be detected unless you have a special alarm fitted.

You’ll more than likely be filling your new home with lots of state of the art electrical equipment such as computers and televisions, but before you plug and play follow the easy steps below to ensure your electrical safety:

- Make sure you know where the main fuse box and power supply are located Check that all switches and wiring are properly covered
- Keep a record of any power surges and blown fuses and if these appear to be very frequent then get a professional to investigate
- Don’t overpopulate any one plug socket and make sure that appliances are unplugged when not in use; especially when you go away!
- Check that all furniture is fire retardant
- Test carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms weekly and if they make an odd ‘chirping’ sound then change the batteries immediately

It may seem like a waste of socializing time but by taking these few easy yet important steps a serious accident could be prevented further down the line.
