Study Skills At University: Creating A Work Space

Students embarking on their post-secondary education at colleges and universities often find themselves surprised by the amount of time they spend on coursework, research, essays and studying. It is crucial that you have a good, well-equipped work space, so that you can get your work done with efficiency and comfort.

Finding or creating a good study space is important, as is getting into the habit of using it consistently. The best study space is going to be one that you are comfortable in, and that you will use. Location isn’t all that important, so long as it is accessible, and how it’s set up is also flexible. What works for your roommate, best friend or parents won’t necessarily work for you.

Where some people prefer to work in their own room, others may find they work better someplace entirely different such as at a library, in their dorm common room, or at a coffee shop. Some people prefer sound around them, and would like some distractions, and others need silence, or a place where they can play their own music at a volume of their choice. You may like working at a desk or table, or sprawled across your bed. There is no right or wrong location, so long as it suits your needs. Do remember that if your favoured place is an outside location such as a library or coffee shop, you may find that your options are restricted by opening hours of you location.

Regardless of where you work, you should have all the supplies you need close at hand. This includes all textbooks, notes, paper, pens, electronics and anything else you might need. If you’re using a laptop or tablet, you need to ensure that it is charged, or that you have a means of plugging it in. In you need internet access, ensure that you are someplace where that is available. If you are working outside your home, it makes sense to have a study bag that is ready to go with all the supplies you need, so that you only need to add your books before you go. Having to stop your work because you are missing vital supplies is a sure-fire way to get off-track.
With a little planning, you can set up the perfect work environment that suits your needs and allows you to get your work done efficiently and consistently.
