Stuttering And My Speech Therapy Experiences
Stammering is something which is quite a complicated problem to understand and it must be very hard for speech therapists to go about helping people who stutter. Ten years ago I successfully overcame a stammer which had been affecting my life for the previous eighteen years. It was not as if I was unable to talk at all, at times I even spoke quite well and when I was drunk I was as fluent as the next person. This last statement was quite interesting for me, I could talk fluently when I was drunk, therefore everytime somebody such as a speech therapist told me that you are unable to cure a stammer, I knew they were wrong. If I was to be permanently drunk, as unhealthy as that might seem, I would surely be fluent. Now of course it is not right or possible to be constantly intoxicated but what I realised I needed to be in order to overcome this speech impediment was permanently mentally drunk but not permanently physically drunk, I hope you understand what I mean. Basically I had to change my attitude and learn to become a lot more chilled out. I found that I could speak better when I was relaxed, when I was comfortable and when I knew the person I was speaking to. At the outset when attending a new set of speech therapy sessions I would be quite nervous as I had never met this particular speech therapist, I would be feeling under pressure as I was likely to be asked a lot of questions and would probably feel quite uncomfortable etc. This would result in me stammering quite badly in the first few sessions. As the weeks moved on I would then start to become far more relaxed as I got to know the speech therapist, this would result in me talking a lot more fluently. I could tell that the speech therapist believed that he/she had done a great job where in reality it was not of course from what they had done. I have to say that I had expected far more from attending speech therapy for eighteen years and eventually decided to find my own stuttering cure.
