Submitting To A Publisher

Writing may be a passion that comes directly from the heart. However, publishing is a tough business that profits the publisher more than the average writer.

Just having your manuscript read and even considered for publishing is tough. It is exceptionally difficult for genres that publisher's have too much of. If a publishing company receives twenty of the same kind of book each month, it does not matter if your manuscript is very good. The publishers will always choose the one that will gain them the most profit. Publishing books is a business and profits matter if a publisher wants to survive. Most of the time, it's this direct line for profit that deviates from seeing the truly great work.

There are many cases where an author will be rejected by dozens of publishers. And just because these authors believed in their own work so much, they persisted, got published, and guess what? They became best sellers.

There are even some cases where the publishers are quite rude about their rejections. Have you ever seen the classic teen horror movie “Carrie”? The movie “Carrie” is based on a novel written by Stephen King. That novel became massively successful when it was published. A movie and a remake of the movie were even made out from the book. This wouldn't have been the case had Stephen King not persisted with his work, especially after having different publishers reject it.

Another great example is that of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone written by J.K Rowling. Belive it or not, the famed novel was actually rejected by dozens of publishers. Well-known names in the world of publishing like Bloomsbury, HarperCollins and Penguin missed the chance to publish a virtual gold mine because they thought that children do not want to read thick books - or so they thought.

These are all true stories, and it could happen to you. It's important to have a very thick skin when trying to get your work published. If not, the dream of being published can quickly fade away.

Being a successful author takes a lot of dedication. Writing requires discipline and the will to succeed. It's certianly not something that everyone is able to do. The most important thing is to stand by your work when contacting a publisher, hope for the best but also plan for the worst.
