For this artist, her work is as much pleasure as business. Even as a teen, her interest in horses was sparked. She started drawing pictures of horses when she was 11, and pursued the pencil sketching medium for many years. She mastered shading early, which helps her capture the depth of her subjects today. She believes every horse has its own distinct personality, which she attempts to convey on canvas. She works with photographs of the subject. Any on site sketches are really notes about peculiar horse characteristics. There are clients, according to her, who ask for continuous adjustments. Sometimes the owner has a preference for a particular angle, or will point out some special characteristic of the horse that they want emphasized. Their owners know all their facial expressions a lot better than the artist like a certain way they turn their eye or wrinkle their forehead, or sometimes a cowlick. The most important consideration for them is that their horses are captured accurately, with no embellishments. She has covered a wide range of breeds and events, including barrel racing and cutting. Capturing a horse in motion is a whole different ball game and requires study. For example, a horse can look gawky when cantering. Using a telephoto lens, she can catch that elusive action angle. She covered as many as 15 18 shows a year when she was in the thick of horse show photography. She would both take photos and render paintings of winning horses for some shows. Those photographers who take on shows full time find it easier to develop pictures on the spot with dark rooms in their vans. She said she usually takes her work home to her own dark room. Her experience, however, does include other types of family pets. Because the different breeds of dogs and cats are not in her portfolio, she needs to see them or paint from a good photograph.
