Successful Spring Cleaning Tips
Go Through the Clutter There’s no polite way of saying it; the mess needs to be sorted through and gotten rid of. You’ll be surprised at just how much garbage is lying around. If you have an especially large amount of stuff to go through consider renting a garbage dumpster from your waste disposal company. Otherwise, have 3-4 extra large (50 gallon) trash bins accessible. It’s always easier to tackle one area at a time, so begin with one room, say the kitchen, and start with the top cabinets and work your way around the room. Then, begin on the lower cabinets and drawers. Make 3 piles: keep, donate, and trash. Seeing your belongings in one pile makes a dramatic visual impact and thus encourages better purging of the unnecessary items. If you have the time to hold a garage sale, you could certainly change the “donate” pile to a “sell” pile. However, many people prefer to save the time and just donate everything they don’t want and then write it off at the end of the year. Clean with Green There’s just no need to clean with harsh and toxic chemicals anymore. Wonderful natural cleaners are now in the market that provides you with the powerful cleaning agents you need, but with no risk of toxic vapors or irritation upon contact with your skin. These chemicals work just as well as the traditional ones we all grew up with. You can even make your own cleaning solutions right from home! All you’ll need is an empty spray bottle and the following ingredients: • Filtered water • White vinegar • Lemon juice • Dried lavender flowers Fill a pitcher with 2 cups of filtered water (tap water can leave streaks). Add 1/8 cup of white vinegar to the container along with 2 tablespoons of dried lavender flowers and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (you can use fresh-squeezed lemon, but bottled lemon juice works best). Allow the mixture to steep for about 30 minutes, strain it, and then pour into your sprayer using a funnel. Viola! Instant cleaner that will lift the dirt, grime and grease and leave your home smelling wonderful! Add Fragrant Accents Now that your home is clutter-free and squeaky clean, make your home smell welcoming with sachet, a dried flower arrangement here and there, and some scented candles. Sachet ingredients can be purchased at your craft store and then made at home with little effort. Produce a wonderfully fragrant sachet by using essential oil and add drops to dried wood shavings, pinecones, and dried plants. You can hang pouches of sachet in any closet or drawer as well! Candles are also a beautiful way to add fragrance and soft lighting to any space. You can make your own at home using dried lavender flowers, drops of essential oil, and some candle wax. A dried flower arrangement can really brighten a room! Spray essential oil onto your arrangement for an even better result. With a little “elbow grease”, some deep cleaning, and by adding fragrant touches, your home can be a picture perfect place where you’ll love to come home to!
