Summer road trips should be safe and fun for the whole family. They take a lot of careful and thoughtful planning. Before people embark on any preparation, they need to get to know the route they will be taking for their road trip. This should be available in a relevant map which can be easily followed. It should include all the trip’s destination details. Friends or family staying behind should be briefed on intended routes. In cases where sudden route changes are inevitable, drivers need to be well equipped within alternatives. The driver should never be the one reading the route map.
This role should be designated to a passenger to ensure that he concentrates.
People have to make sure that the vehicles for use are up to date in terms of maintenance. The procedures for maintenance will include checking the tires, battery, air-conditioning, lights, wipers, safety belts, oil and water or coolant. People should make sure that the tires have enough pressure and that the battery is charged.
Due to the changing weather conditions, air-conditioning should be working well to make them bearable. All the lights and wipers should be functional. The safety belts should be in place and the oil level should be enough to sustain the drive. The vehicle should then be cleaned thoroughly to give the road trip a fresh start. An emergency kit should be prepared and put in the car. The contents should include a flashlight, a first aid kit, gloves, flares, food and water. It can also be packed with paper towels, jumper cables and extra clothes. All these will come in handy during the trip as anything can happen and it is always wise for people to be prepared. There should be a toolbox with screwdrivers, pliers, wrench, vise grips and ratchets just in case the car develops a mechanical hitch on the road. Drivers should list physical addresses and phone numbers of mechanics and car dealers en route just in case they stall.
The car should be stocked with a lot of water. People should put together enough books and toys for their children if they are traveling with them to keep them busy. The travel partners should be well known and trustworthy. Attackers on main roads and high ways target lone travelers and drivers will also stay alert when they have people to talk to. Travelers taking road trips should avoid picking up people on the way or stopping to assist other motorists.
They could be a threat to their safety and they should instead call the police. If they were to come across ‘road rage’, it is advisable to maintain their cool since it is hard to tell peoples intentions and situations could get out of hand. Drivers should be fully alert and avoid distractions which may cause accidents. Their cell phones should be fully charged for emergencies. It is advisable to take breaks when driving to relax and stretch out. These breaks can also be used to eat, rest, and energize.
