Sunday Nap
Somewhere in the back ground, you can hear a radio playing some music, some children running around enjoying themselves outside and someone in a yard next door, fine tuning a car. But you drift off to sleep and peacefully settle into that comfort zone of pure bliss. Then after a while, you wake up. You look around and find you are a little confused, because it is bright daylight and you are not used to sleeping during the day. Then you realize that it is Sunday, and you are ok, you are entitled to this little bliss of sleeping during the day. Lazily you stretch and close your eyes to rest a while longer, only to be woken by sounds in and around the house. The rest period is over. People are rousing once again for the last stretch of this rest day. Children are shouting as they play and chase one another, the car revver next door are in earnest trying to rev the car right, instead of trying to find out what ails it after all, and the phone rings, really calling you to get up. Its mom on the phone, she wants to come over quick, she has some news of some family or other. You get up, brush your teeth and dab some perfume on your wrists and splash a little cologne on a clean hanky to tuck in your blouse. Even though you had to get up, you are still in a good mood and set off to the kitchen to prepare a tray of cups and stuff for when mom arrives a little later. It is a hot day, and perhaps she’d rather want some juice. But knowing mom, you are more than 90% sure that it will have to be coffee. Luckily there are some biscuits to serve with the coffee. That is if the children have not yet discovered it and devoured it. They are always ravenous, even if they have just gotten up from a large dinner with desert and all the trimmings. In the lounge you turn the radio on, tuning it to a local radio station where you can listen to current events in your neighborhood and surrounding areas. While waiting for mom, you sit quietly in the big old arm chair, and somehow or another, doze off again. When mom hoots outside, you shake awake, get up and open the gates for her. You welcome her in and she asks you what you have been doing. When you tell her that you’ve been having your usual Sunday nap, she laughs and says that she had missed hers, but that she will make up for it the next Sunday, for now, she fills you in with the news on the family, near and far.
