Survival Kit
Now that we have established that survival kits are there to help one survive in case of an emergency, what would you want to have in your survival kit? Usually it would be something to shelter you from the elements, something to keep you warm, good provision of first aid supplies, some food and water, and maybe a signal pistol. A very basic survival kit will have some cutting instrument, like a pair of scissors or a knife, or perhaps a multi-tool, also matches, a sewing kit, torch and batteries. But the question is, what would you want in your survival kit? If you were to land on a deserted island today, what would you wish for in a survival kit? Of course the first thing should be shelter, as mentioned before, as well as food and water. Those are the basics. What is it that you would not be able to live without? I can think of a few things for myself, such as a sunscreen. Not knowing when you will ever be in civilization again, you would want to protect your skin against sun damage. I would also want to have my perfume. Don’t laugh! Did you know the alcohol in the perfume will help against insect stings and bites? Guess you didn’t think of that, did you? So the perfume would serve a double purpose, it would make you smell nice, but it will have medicinal value in that where you are exposed to all sorts of insects and spiders, you could apply it to sooth the bite or sting. I would like my citronella scented candles as well. Not only will these keep the mosquito’s away, but they also smell nice. The light of the candles will be a beacon in the dark, in case a rescue party is out there looking for us. An ax would be handy. It would be able to cut down small trees with, to build a shelter, and to chop up wood for a fire to keep warm, or to cook on. One could use large leaves to form make-shift plates to serve food on, if you don’t have plates. You could even use large pieces of tree bark as plates. Once again the light of the fire could be a beacon in the dark, but it could also keep wild animals away. Lastly I would like to have my personal hygiene items with me. I would love my bar of soap, it could easily double up to wash clothes and utensils as well. One need not only land a deserted island to need a survival kit, what about when a natural disaster hits your? Makes you think, doesn’t it?
