Sweating On The Treadmill For Hours Is A Waste Of Time
I confess! I’m one of those guys that have spent hours upon hours on the treadmill or on my NordicTrack and have sweat enough to where I feel like I should be losing weight but each time I jump on my scale I have been severely disappointed.
I was recently introduced to the interval training concept and I was blown away by the results. My weight has finally dropped below that weight plateau that has made me wonder if my scale is working. I have replaced my hourly sessions pounding the time away on the treadmill with interval training and have found that where I was spending 60 minutes I am now only spending about 20 minutes and the results are totally amazing.
If you are not familiar with interval training it is a cardio training exercise where you start very slow and increase your speed until you hit your target heart rate. Once you hit your target rate immediately slow your speed and watch your heart monitor. Once your heart rate begins to fall then you kick your speed back up for about 20 seconds until you reach your target again. Alternate your speed throughout your workout and at the end of your workout you will be pleasantly surprised because the amount of time spent in your target range has been achieved with a fraction of the physical effort.
One of the things that I found is essential is a good heart monitor. You do not want to exceed 90% of your maximum heart rate. Experts recommend that you keep your workout heart rates between 75% and 85% of your maximum rate.
Interval training is done in conjunction with the other exercises that are in your program for strength and agility. I’m using the Turbulence Training program and have been able to complete a full work out in less than 45 minutes. No more spending hours upon hours on the treadmill for me.
Take a look at the program. It’s easy and there are a number of programs that you can do no matter what your present physical condition is.
