Tv Safety For Babies

Many new parents would never think that their TV could pose a physical danger to their baby, but in New Zealand, a toppling TV actually crushed a baby. The trouble occurs when a baby tries to pull itself up on furniture that is top heavy and unstable. Many parents have their TV perched on a stand that is unsuitable due to instability. Often, toys or other objects attractive to baby are placed next to the TV for safety. But that only encourages the toddler to reach up in an effort to explore his world.

If your baby is at the crawling stage, he will soon start to pull himself up on whatever is available. Make sure that your TV stand is stable; get down on your knees and pull or push at it yourself and see how likely it is to fall over. The bigger the TV, the more likely it is to fall if not placed on a stable surface.

Since a toddler has no idea of danger, it is up to the parents to provide a safe environment. If possible buy a TV that has an anchor point on the back, so it can be fixed safely to the wall. If not, make sure the TV is placed on a solid cupboard that cannot be tipped over. The base should be heavy and wider than the TV.
