Tackle The Golf Ball
In the early eighties we made a decision in the UK to phase out the 1.62" ball in favour of the 1.68" ball. We recognised we would lose length, but our short game would be helped with the larger ball. Hasn't the time come when we should increase the size of the titleist dt golf ball, to say 1.75", accepting that we would lose some length and maybe some control? However, our courses would be protected. The lifespan of a ball is short; the manufacturers could tool up to a new size easily, so the investment issues would be minor. Answer. It is my personal opinion that the notion of traditional golf courses becoming obsolete due to technology (in particular driving distance) is a bit of a myth. My evidence? Final qualifying for this year's Open took place at Ladybank (6,580yds) and Scotscraig (6,669yds) both of which I'd consider to be traditional courses that are short by modern standards. The best 36-hole totals were six and f ive-under-par respectively, yet at the considerably longer Fairmont (7,230yds) and Kingsbarns (7,181yds) the scores were better at eight and seven-under-par. To my mind longer courses actually encourage more players to use driver whereas shorter courses force top players to play more strategically. I believe the rules that have been introduced by The R&A and USCA concerning COR, the ball and grooves have addressed the issue of driving distance eroding the importance of skill. Introducing a new ball which would require retooling by manufacturers would actually be very costly and that cost would likely be passed on to those people who pay for golf balls - that's ordinary golfers like you and me, not the pros! I'm sure the governing bodies are keeping a watching brief, but I see no reason for such a huge change at this stage.
