Taking Care Of Upholstered Furnishings

It's important to understand that upholstered furniture is all different. You have to understand the basics of each fabric, in order to clean it safely.

Vacuuming Upholstery
Having extra furnishings in your home can bring about a certain comfort. However, you have to give it proper care in order to keep it looking nice when others come to visit. Even though you may think this is extra time you don't have in your schedule, we recommend doing it anyway. It will definitely be worth the effort.

Sometimes you also have to think about prevention, which will eliminate fabric fading, and many other issues that come into play. We recommend controlling the light by using shades, blinds, or even draperies. Even though this may sound odd, we also suggest you place a small cloth or paper towel underneath the cushions. This way you can deal with spills quickly.

The Vacuuming Process

Obviously you can keep things clean by frequently vacuuming them. It's still considered to be the best way to maintain your upholstery. It can prevent dust, dirt, and even stains from falling deep within the fiber. Doing this will keep them looking new for a long time.
If you need a few helpful tips, read all of them below:

• Before vacuuming, look for loose buttons and threads so you don't clog the vacuum.
• If you can, try to repair these issues after you vacuum.
• Don't be afraid to take advantage of the soft brush attachment. However, only use one of them for upholstery.
• If you find things in tight spots, use a crevice tool.

The Upholstery Cleaning Process

• Read the manufacturer's label about how to clean or add a product to your upholstery.
• You only have to clean it once every year or two, but sometimes there are exceptions. Try commercial, DIY, and foam cleaning.
• Make sure you don't soak the fabric with the cleaners.
• Get rid of all the soap residue.
• Look to see if your cleaning product contains a soil retardant. If not, look for one that does so you can prevent future staining.
• We also recommend trying to use a spray-silicon soil for issues with soiling. If it's already been treated, you'll have to use the same product the manufacturer used.
• No one is perfect, so spills will happen regardless. The only way to fix this is by looking for the care instructions.
• Find a small area where you can test the product. Nothing is worse then experiencing a coloring issue out in the middle of the floor.
• Always blot your spills. People make the mistake of rubbing all the time and it just makes things worse. Oh, and don't used colored towels.
• Get as much of it out as possible. When you see that nothing else is working, then treat the remaining stain.
• If you have slipcovers, we recommend removing them when you spot-clean. If you want to keep them on, then place something underneath them so the other upholstery doesn't get affected.

Removing Pet Hair

• When removing pet hair you need to use a bristle head or napped fabric head.
• You can also pick up pet hair with a clothes lint remover and sticky tape.
• If you can't find anything, wrap masking tape around your hand with the sticky side out.

The Basics of Fabric

When it comes to upholstery, cotton fabrics are the most common ones used. Just remember that the durability depends on the weave and finish. Another thing to keep in mind is if it's already been pre-washed, then you can use soap and water to clean it. Regardless you should still make sure the manufacturer doesn't have an alternative cleaning method.

The best part about cotton blends is they're a family-friendly product. It's still important to put a stain-resistant finish on it so you can use them everyday without harm.

If you're looking for help in the family room area, canvas is a great choice. It's extremely durable and can handle the constant visits to the area. You definitely have to vacuum this area frequently. Doing a little pre-washing before fabrication can allow you to clean the slip covers in the washing machine.

Adding a little formal appeal to your home is nice for certain occasions, which is why people enjoy damask weaves. However, if you don't want to break the threads, you have to brush and vacuum them gently.

Linens are another great fabric for formal and adult areas. We recommend having these professionally cleaned, especially if you own a restaurant. Also, you need to make sure you don't let them have direct exposure to sunlight.

The 21st century has brought on newer additions like microfibers. It offers a range of colors, and they resist almost every stain out there. Best of all you can clean them with soap and water. It's a great option for anyone who has children.

If you need a more durable piece of fabric, then we recommend something with wool or wool blends. If you go with blends they can be spot cleaned when necessary. However, check to see what the manufacturer recommends.

Another fabric that is popular amongst adults is silk. Even though it's a delicate fabric, you will find it in several formal area. Keep in mind though it has to be professionally cleaned if it gets soiled. You should also keep it out of sunlight as well.

One of the better options today is sunbrella fabrics. You will find these both indoors and outdoors, offering resistance to stains and fading. This option is great for any family who is constantly on the run.

Leather furniture is easy to clean considering the mystique it holds in offices, dens, and formal living rooms. As long as you gently vacuum and use a little damp wipe when needed, you will make it immaculate during the cleaning process.

Last but not least, suede can be vacuumed with a soft brush attachment. Just make sure the cleaner you use is only for suede. If you don't, it will change the color and ruin the upholstery. Oh, and NEVER clean with water.
