Taking Care Of Your Travel Trailer
You drive your car almost everyday, but you might use your trailer for only four months out of the year. This gives hoses and lines the chance to freeze or to dry up and crack. That is why it is so important to empty your lines and fluid systems when you park it until next year. Conversely, if you spend nearly all of your time hauling and living in your trailer, then the up-keep is going to be significantly more important to look at on a consistent basis. There are basically there systems there are at work in a travel trailer. There is a mechanical system, an electrical system, and a water/septic system. The mechanical system is mostly related to how the trailer moves on the road and how it is hauled, although you could also include doors and hinges (which are important, and even more important if they are loose). Whenever you park your trailer for an extended period of time, and whenever you are getting ready to begin a trip, take a few moments to check everything that moves to make sure it is not moving too much or too little. Your owner manual will help you find all of the important spots. The electrical system is vital. Generator problems are not all that uncommon, but since most people are not weekend electricians, the best thing to do is keep the manual nearby and make sure to keep up on maintenance with the generator itself. Another important facet of the electrical system has to do with the indication lights. It is vitally important that your break lights and turn signals are in good working order. If somebody else has a problem driving, you do not want that problem to involve you just because you did not check before you left to make sure the break lights were working. Aside from covering any exposed wires (which is ALWAYS a good idea), there is not too much to do in terms of taking care of your travel trailer while it is parked, with one exception: if at all possible, try to cover any wires or electrical connections from the elements in winter. They are made to withstand weather, but they are not invincible and you can have a lot of problems on your hand if you wake up in spring to find yourself investigating the source of the turn signal malfunction. The last system to pay attention is the water/septic system. Of course, you must follow proper draining and refilling schedules and procedures. Filters are important to pay attention to, as well. And last but not least, if your water pump goes out, it usually is not too big of a repair, but make sure to do it right away, even if you are parking your travel trailer for the next six months. Having a travel trailer is a lot of fun, and as long as you stay up on the maintenance, the fun will continue for years to come! Summary: Maintenance is an important part of owning a travel trailer.
