Tax Relief: For Generous Souls

Gifts can be given to just anyone and is sure to brings a smile on their faces. But there are some gifts which cannot be measured on any scale. One of them is the gift of sight to a blind person, which benefits you as well as the receiver. Donating to an organization which helps people see is a very beautiful gesture. You will also benefit from it at the end of the day by saving money.

Some gifts bring tax relief with them while others don’t qualify. Normally, the gifts which qualify for tax relief are the ones which are for greater public good rather than good of the individual or private groups. This can be seen in the following examples.

Gifts to religious organizations are tax exempt. The contribution can be made to any such organization whether it is a church or a mosque or a temple. Gifts or contributions made to the federal government also qualify for tax relief. The same holds true of gifts to state government or local government. The federal income tax you pay is also a contribution to the federal government but it does not qualify for the reason you pay it against a legal liability.

Donating to recognized charitable schools and hospitals is eligible for tax relief. You can also make contribution to a war veterans’ group and claim deduction. On the other hand, payments made to certain other organization and associations do not qualify for tax relief. Contributions made to social clubs, sports clubs and homeowners’ association and similar other private groups are not exempt from tax. Of course, payment to any individual is not considered charity and enjoys no tax benefit.
