In order to overcome the effects of natural disasters, there are special tax law provisions. These are enacted to assist individual taxpayers and businesses by affording them some tax relief after the event of a natural disaster. Although we do not like to think along these lines, it is very necessary for every US taxpayer to heed these precautions. These laws might only allow for the individual or business taxpayers to be able to file their taxes at a later date. However, this means that the IRS may grant additional time for the filing of a tax return. Nevertheless, if the President has declared your location to be a major disaster area, faster refunds may be received by claiming any losses that are related to the disaster on the tax return for the previous year. This entails having to file an amended tax return. In order to claim tax relief in the instance of a disaster, an individual taxpayer or business has to be able to prove that they were, in fact, prepared for this. It is a very good idea to have well-kept records stored at a secure facility, in a paperless format. Recordkeeping should include information regarding valuables and assets as well as any emergency planning records. It is awful to think about losses that might be caused by disaster situations; but, there are ways that the IRS can assist to lessen the impact of any losses caused from the damage to, or destruction of, your property in the case of events such as hurricane, fire, tornado, flood, earthquake or volcanic eruption.
