Tax Relief For Dependents

It was a matter of delight for the Jacksons to have foster child living with them as they did not have any of their own. Having a child is a joyful event. But it brings with it new responsibilities. The task of looking after a child is easier said than done. For working parents it is even more difficult to provide constant care for the child. In fact, it becomes essential for them to find a person to look after the child. No doubt, it involves extra expense. Well, the good news is that such expenditure enjoys tax relief.

There are some important conditions, though. The child should be below thirteen years of age. Married parents will have to file joint return to claim this tax relief. If you are married but are filing separate return, you can not claim credit for child care expenses. However, if you are divorced and have paid for child care, you qualify.

Similar tax relief is available on expenses incurred for taking care of a dependent who is physically or mentally not capable to look after himself. Such a dependent can be your spouse as well. However, to qualify for tax benefit, the dependent has to be residing with you for at least half the year. The same residence test applies for the child as well.

To get tax credit for dependent care, the social security number of the dependent has to be provided in the return. The name and address of the person who was paid for looking after the child or the dependent also has to be given in the return. You need to remember, however, that payment made to another dependent for looking after the child or the invalid dependent does not qualify for tax relief.
