Science fairs are held every year throughout the country and each year thousands of students do their best to create amazing projects. If you are a science teacher and want to help your students to both learn more from their science fair experience and improve their scientific inquiry skills, then you need to develop a set of lesson plans that revolve around science fair topics. These lesson plans will introduce students to the concepts that they need to understand to create a project and they will also teach students the skills that they need to be scientists.
Set Goals and Objectives
The first part of your science fair lesson plan will be your goals and objectives. For science fair lesson plans the goals and objectives are going to revolve around what skills you want your students to learn.
Introductory Activities
The next part of your science fair lesson plan is going to look at the introductory activities for the lesson. An introductory activity is anything that you do to introduce a concept to your student. For example, you will need to introduce terminology and concepts like the scientific method, hypotheses and experimentation to your students before moving on to guided study.
Guided Study
The guided study portion of your lesson plan will include activities that apply the terms and concepts introduced in the last segment of your lesson plan to a science situation. For example, you can develop a student’s ability to complete an experiment by having them conduct several experiments or by having them come up with their own experiments to test a given hypothesis.
Review Module
At the end of the class, or lesson, you need to include a review module. This module will test the students’ understanding and comprehension of what you went over in class. It can include holding a class discussion, giving a quiz or completing a worksheet. This is normally the graded part of the class.
Homework
While no student likes homework, it is an important part of a lesson plan on science fair projects. Homework assignments for science fair modules can include completing a project at home or it can be as simple as coming up with a list of possible project ideas.
