Teaching To Learn
I had a conversation with a friend of mine who admitted he has an ego-trip and that he just liked hearing the sound of his own voice. It gave him the feeling that he had power over others because they were the “passive” listeners listening to his ability to speak so eloquently on his vast knowledge of things. On a more personal note, providing suggestions or coming up with lesson plans to help others made me realize that it pushes me to collect and organize my thoughts that were intended to help others in the first place. And as a result preparing these teachings enable me to evaluate and re-evaluate everything that I am providing which would not only make sense to my listeners but also to me. In both scenarios, positive gains were made for my friend as well as me because they make us look back on what we have done. In my friend’s case, he figured out he had an ego-trip and that sometimes it would be detrimental to his abilities to be the listener to continue to expand upon his vast neurological library of knowledge. In essence, he would block himself from learning more if he never reflected on his past actions or, in this case, his teachings. For me knowledge becomes fitted into a filing shelf and is more easily accessible by me if I had to explain certain things to others. Preparing for others in a way prepares me to fine-tune my abilities to communicate with others in need. So my “students” had actually taught me to become more organized. And as I pursue this new endeavor of mine into Coastal, it’s becoming clearer and clearer to me what I’m providing with this business opportunity as I learn from my own teachings.
