Teenage Drug Abuse And Teenage Alcoholism: A Problem Running Wild
The scary thing about teenage drug abuse and teenage alcoholism - is the fact how young kids getting addicted to drugs and alcohol are today. It's not uncommon to see kids of 12 and 13 in rehab being treated for addiction.
It's not easy being a teenager. Trying to fit in, make sense of yourself and the changes you're going through, the pressures of school - plus really starting to take an active interest in the opposite sex, make it a difficult time.
On top of that, teenagers these days are being exposed to a lot more from a much younger age through the media and television. Topics like alcohol, drugs and sex, are not possibly regarded as taboo in the same way they were 10-20 years ago.
And with the usual experimentation that happens at that age anyway, you now have kids of 10 trying drugs and alcohol. The problem is that at that age, you just don't have the maturity to deal with that and so it will create problems.
One just can't point the escalation of teen alcoholism and teen drug addiction to any single factor, however. There are just too many different reasons to consider.
Being exposed to more younger and so experimenting earlier as I touched on above, combined with peer pressure - play a large role. You do a lot of stupid things as a teenager because of peer pressure, abusing alcohol and drugs just one of those.
I wonder too about the standard of parenting, not being possibly what it was, playing a role? More and more single parent families, parents that work longer hours, and higher than ever divorce rates - have a massive effect on teenagers, who then turn to drugs and alcohol to escape their pain, insecurity and confusion.
I do think though that one of the biggest reasons for the increasing problem of teenage addiction, is the availability of alcohol, and especially drugs. The availability and accessibility of seriously dangerous drugs like heroin and amphetamines makes it so much easier for kids to get hold of these drugs than ever before. You even have drug dealers that deliver to your door these days - it's just become so easy.
Getting on top of the fight against teen drug abuse and alcoholism is becoming more difficult. In reality, as a parent, there is only so much you can do. Providing a stable and loving family/home environment is your most important task. All you can then do, is hope that it will be enough.
