Teeth Whitening Kits - Can They Damage Your Teeth When Used Excessively?

Teeth whitening is big business these days. It is not just rich celebrities that are wandering around with dazzling white smiles. It is becoming more and more common for ordinary members of the public to get their teeth whitened as well. However in this article I want to talk about the dangers of teeth whitening, and discuss whether or not you can whiten your teeth too much.

The trouble with watching a lot of TV programs and movies, and reading a lot of celebrity magazines is that seeing lots of these famous people with their perfect smiles makes you self-conscious about your own teeth. As a result of this, some people whiten their teeth repeatedly over and over again in order to get the same kind of teeth that are equally as white.

However it's important to remember that a lot of these celebrities will have had a lot more work done than a simple teeth whitening procedure. In a lot of cases they may have paid thousands of dollars for veneers to be fitted.

It's also worth bearing in mind that many people think that teeth that are too white look fake and slightly unattractive. Indeed there are many celebrities that I can think of that now look slightly odd because their teeth are ridiculously white. So you shouldn't necessarily be aiming to make them as white as possible. The goal should be to make them a natural shade of white, without looking as if they have been professionally whitened.

If you whiten your teeth too much, there is also the real danger that you will damage your teeth and leave them looking a lot worse. This is because if you use a particular treatment for too long, or if you do not leave long enough between treatments (a 6-12 month break is generally recommended), then your teeth can turn grey and start to appear translucent.

This is obviously not a good look, and will possibly put you off teeth whitening for life. So you should always follow the instructions provided with each treatment, or take advice from your dentist.

If you look after your teeth after you have had them whitened, then you shouldn't need to redo them for another one or two years anyway. You just need to limit your intake of tea, coffee and red wine, and try and give up smoking if possible.

So to go back to the original point, the truth is that yes you can indeed whiten your teeth too much. Not only can they appear too white in some cases and look unattractive and slightly odd, but you can also damage them if you are not careful. This will leave them translucent and even more unattractive. So try and leave as much time as possible between treatments, and certainly a minimum of six months if you want healthy teeth that are a natural shade of white.
